Color Management in Photoshop

I published my last essay on Color Management in Photoshop a few months after the release of CS6 (V.13) in 2012. So, here we are in April 2018 and Photoshop is now at version 19. Given the passage of time you’d be forgiven for thinking that much would have changed.

However, with the exception of the UI, Color management in Photoshop is largely unchanged. As such, this essay is, for the most part, simply an update of earlier versions rather than a rewrite ->

Camera Raw 9.5 now available

Camera Raw 9.5 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to Adobe’s camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.5 is only available in Photoshop CC or later.  Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilise the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

The Camera Raw 9.5 interface has also been updated to align with Photoshop CC and Bridge.

You can change your Photoshop or Bridge colour scheme from interface preferences within the host application. The Camera Raw interface colour will then mimic your chosen colour scheme

Bugs Fixed in Camera Raw 9.5

  • Fix crash/hang in Camera Raw and DNG Converter on some Mac systems when saving multiple images.
  • Fix corruption issue that would prevent DNG images originally created by Parrot Bebop Drone devices from being opened after metadata updates.
  • Pressing the Option/Alt key while click-dragging on a perimeter handle of a Radial Filter will adjust only that side of the filter. This change in behavior was made to match Lightroom’s behaviour. Previously, Option/Alt-clicking on a Radial Filter in Camera Raw would delete that filter.
  • Camera Raw Filter now displays the histogram and RGB color readouts using the assigned color space of the corresponding Photoshop document. Previously, Camera Raw Filter always displayed its histogram and RGB color readouts using the ProPhoto color space.
  • Improve quality of Boundary Warp for some panoramas.
  • Fix bug where EXIF metadata for SIGMA 50mm f/1.4 ART lens on Canon was incorrectly identified as Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4.

New Mexico & Arizona Highlights 2014

photoventuresEarly December saw me travelling to the USA for the second time in 2014. The primary purpose of the visit was photograph White Sands National Monument and Bosque del Apache. However, as has been the case on past visits we spent the first  three days travelling along Route 66 between Albuquerque (New Mexico) and Holbrook (Arizona). The trip was organised by Roger Reynolds at Photoventures.net who has travelled to these locations on many previous occasions and knows the area very well. The route map as recorded on my trusty Garmin eTrex Vista GPS device is shown below.

The weather conditions varied quite a bit, which made some of the locations a lot more photogenic than was the case when I made a similar trip in late December 2010. This was especially the case when we visited the Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook. It had been raining heavily just prior to our arrival.

From Holbrook we travelled across to Bosque del Apache. Along the way we stopped to photograph the Very Large Array near Socorro. Again, it had been raining just prior to our arrival.

We spent four very productive days at Bosque del Apache. As always there were plenty of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, but two my favourite photographs from this part of the trip are shown below.

More photographs from the trip can be seen the gallery.

All photos were taken on Canon EOS 5D MkIII or Canon EOS 7D MkII. Post processing was carried out in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC 2014.
